Apple Reportedly Planning Major Overhaul with Year-Based OS Naming: Bloomberg

Apple

Apple is reportedly preparing to make a major change to how it names its operating systems, moving away from sequential version numbers in favor of a new year-based naming scheme. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this overhaul will be officially announced during WWDC 2025, which begins on June 9. The new naming system is expected to align all of Apple’s OS platforms with the calendar year, creating a more consistent and intuitive update cycle for users and developers alike.

Under this new format, iOS 19 will be renamed iOS 26, with other platforms following suit: iPadOS 19 will become iPadOS 26, macOS 16 will shift to macOS 26, watchOS 12 to watchOS 26, tvOS 19 to tvOS 26, and visionOS 3 to visionOS 26. This approach mirrors naming conventions seen in other tech ecosystems and aims to simplify understanding of software timelines.

Beyond just the names, Apple is also planning a major visual overhaul. Internally codenamed “Solarium,” the redesign will introduce a fresh interface inspired by visionOS. Users can expect more translucent UI elements, rounded icons, and a streamlined look across iPhones, iPads, Macs, and more. Together, these changes mark one of the biggest updates to Apple’s software ecosystem in recent years, signaling a more unified and forward-facing experience across all devices.
